Here on the ground before you are 1700 squirrels. This mural took two weeks to make, with dedicated work hours from 8am to 10pm every day. It was up for one day and then removed.
The removal of this mural was a group effort, and if you watch the movie you will see an hour and a half of footage reduced to 3 and a half minutes and then reveresed. The end result is an excellent mini-documentary of the "creation" of this mural.
This mural is the second time this was attempted. In the Fall I got to 1300 or so squirrels before bad weather and dragging feet brought their demise.
Both murals were time well spent. This was the year that I was the Art Nurse and being where the people were was my job. This was one of my many offices. So for two weeks in the Fall and two weeks in the Spring, I sat outside and answered questions. If a person had a quandary, they had to walk no further than their front door.
My interest in drawing the squirrels came from a desire to transform this square into a particular density of green. Squirrels are infinitely fun to draw, the right size and proportions to make that shade of green come true. I attempted to draw each one differently.
13 years after the first Tape Art drawing was created and removed on this very space, the pure joy of drawing with thin strips of paper and glue has not diminished at all.
